Ciao! 🇮🇹
IVA(イタリアの消費税のようなもの)22%
Ivan
・INPS(年金・社会保険料)
✅ IVA
✅ INPS
🇺🇸Ciao! 🇮🇹✨
I am currently preparing to start my own freelance esthetician business in Milan.
Today, I would like to share an important lesson I learned during a meeting with my trusted accountant, Ivan.
The topic is:
“With a 50:50 revenue sharing contract, do I really receive 50%?”
At first glance, a 50:50 agreement with a salon seems simple and fair.
However, in Italy, depending on the tax system you use, the actual amount you keep in your hands can be very different from what you expect.
I hope this information will be useful for anyone considering becoming a freelancer in Italy, especially in the beauty industry.
① The hidden problem with a 50:50 contract ⚠️
Why does the amount you keep become smaller?
Let’s imagine that your total sales are €10,000.
Your agreement with the salon is:
50:50 revenue split
So you might think:
You: €5,000
Salon: €5,000
Seems fair, right?
But there is an important point.
When the salon invoices you, they add:
IVA (Italian VAT) 22%
So the payment to the salon becomes:
€5,000 + €1,100 IVA
= €6,100
Now the calculation looks like this:
Total sales: €10,000
↓
Payment to the salon: €6,100
↓
Amount remaining for you: €3,900
So even though the contract says “50:50,” the real amount left for you may be closer to 39%.
This is why it is essential to look at the actual amount you keep (Net income), not only the percentage written in the contract.
② Why does this happen? 💡
The reason is related to the Italian tax system:
Regime Forfettario
With this system, freelancers cannot recover or deduct the IVA they pay.
For example, in a normal business structure, companies can often balance the IVA they pay and the IVA they receive.
However, with Regime Forfettario:
The IVA you pay becomes your own cost.
That is why it is so important to calculate:
“How much money will actually remain after all costs?”
before signing a contract.
③ The solution suggested by Ivan 💡✨
Ivan explained that the most important thing is not simply looking at the percentage, but calculating the final amount that remains after all costs.
He suggested two possible approaches:
Option 1
Make the 50:50 split based on the final amount including IVA
Instead of calculating only the base amount, adjust the agreement so that the total payment including IVA remains balanced.
Option 2
Adjust the revenue-sharing percentage
For example:
50:50
could become:
45:55
or
40:60
depending on the IVA impact.
The important thing is not the number written on the contract.
The important thing is:
“How much money will I actually have left after taxes and contributions?”
④ Taxes and INPS (Social Security Contributions) for Estheticians 🇮🇹💶
For the beauty industry (ATECO code: 96.02.02), under Regime Forfettario, not all of your sales are considered taxable income.
The calculation is based on 67% of your revenue.
For example:
Annual revenue: €30,000
€30,000 × 67%
= €20,100
Taxes and INPS (social security and pension contributions) are calculated based on this amount.
For new businesses, if certain conditions are met, the substitute tax may be reduced to 5% instead of the standard rate.
There may also be a possibility to apply for a 35% INPS reduction, depending on eligibility.
However, it is always important to confirm the details with your accountant.
Conclusion 🌿
The biggest lesson I learned from my conversation with Ivan is:
“Do not focus only on how much revenue you receive. Focus on how much money actually remains in your hands.”
When you see:
“50:50 split”
it sounds safe and simple.
But in reality, you need to consider:
✅ IVA
✅ Taxes
✅ INPS contributions
✅ Actual net income
Before becoming independent, understanding your real numbers is essential.
This experience taught me that successful entrepreneurship is not only about sales — it is also about understanding the financial structure behind your business.
I am continuing my preparations step by step toward my launch in September 🇮🇹✨
I will share more updates as things progress. 💆♀️🌿
